Rose Parade wonders of a century ago - with post-parade ostrich, elephant and camel races

The special 1913 Rose Parade edition of the Pasadena Daily News featured a rose-covered glamour girl on the cover, and portraits of the parade's queen - and king, as decreed by President Edward T. Off to reign over the event. (HAND-IN)

A hundred years ago there was a Tournament of Roses parade just as there will be this week.

The Pasadena Daily News published a special edition about the parade and it also printed articles on the many wonders of Pasadena.

Edward T. Off was president of the Tournament of Roses Association and wrote of its history.

He said, "Commercialism has never been permitted to enter our floral parade. No painted signs or sordid suggestion of any kind encroaches to mar the beautiful effect."

President Off decreed in 1913 that both a king and queen should reign over the event.

Harrison I. Drummond and Miss Jean P. French were named.

The judges awarded a special prize to Adolphus Busch for the best horse-drawn vehicle in the parade. The Komical Knights of the Karnival won first prize for a two-horse vehicle.

The prize for gasoline powered automobiles carrying four or more went to the Hotel Green. The Keystone Film Company, known for Keystone Comedies, came in second.

Emma H. Diers got first prize for electric vehicles.

The Association had made enough money to buy the 21-acre area that became known as Tournament Park.

After the parade, chariot races were held at Tournament Park before 50,000 people. Jo Hendrickson, in his history of the Tournament, says that memorable in 1913 were ostrich races and an elephant-camel race.

He says one ostrich threw the rider off and the elephant had to be

prodded to finish.

Articles in the special Pasadena Daily News edition included "Dreams and Visions" by Rev. Robert J. Burdette, "Game and Fish in Southern California" by Joe Welsh, "Pasadena Thirty Years Ago" by J. W. Wood, "Church Life in Pasadena" by Rev. Robert Freeman, D.D., "Pasadena a Floral Bower" by P.D. Barnhart, "Mid-Winter Outdoor Life in Pasadena" by Dr. Garrett Newkirk, "Beautiful Homes of Pasadena," by Isabel Bates Winslow and "How Pasadena in Governed" by Mayor William H. Thum.

There was an article on the Pasadena Polo Club that played at Tournament Park. Another on "Arroyo Seco Natural Park - An Inspiration to the Artists."

Tournament Park at Wilson Avenue and California Boulevard now mostly belongs to Caltech.

Orange County Register owner eyes Tribune papers

?

SANTA ANA, Calif. ? The publisher of the Orange County Register said Thursday that at an investor group he leads may want to buy Tribune Co.'s newspapers after the media conglomerate emerges from bankruptcy.

"We clearly have the means and the team by which to look seriously at the Tribune papers and, from the outside, they may very well have enough of the elements that we're looking for," said Aaron Kushner, chief executive of 2100 Trust LLC, which bought Freedom Communications Inc. and its flagship paper, the Register, in July.

Tribune, which is expected to leave bankruptcy protection soon, owns the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, Baltimore Sun and five other daily newspapers. The Chicago-based conglomerate also operates 23 television stations.

Kushner cautioned that he hasn't examined Tribune's finances but signaled he would move quickly if he determined its newspapers are a good fit.

"I think it's a pretty small group that potentially could fit our model," he said in an interview.

Kushner, who is also Freedom Communications' CEO, has overseen the hiring of dozens of journalists and a major expansion of the print edition of the Register, the nation's 20th-largest newspaper by circulation and a direct competitor of the Los Angeles Times. Freedom Communications is the 39-year-old's first foray in newspapers after he flirted with buying The Boston Globe and newspapers in Maine.

Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2008, less than a year after a debt-laden buyout engineered by Sam Zell. Its new owners include JPMorgan Chase & Co., debt specialist Angelo, Gordon & Co., and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management.

Kushner said he expects the Tribune's new owners would sell the newspapers in a single package.

"There's a tremendous amount of infrastructure that's shared among the newspapers, and they have been together, with the exception of the LA Times, for a long time," Kushner said. "Disassembling them in an auction sort of a way or a process may be achievable, but our sense is it would end up resulting in significantly less for the current owners of the Tribune Co."

Freedom recently sold The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kushner signaled he was open to selling Freedom's five smaller newspapers in California and Arizona.

"We wouldn't have bought them if we didn't love them. That said, if we find that there is an owner that can do an even better job than us with them, we'll talk with them," he said.

Putin signs law banning American adoptions - World News

Those already undergoing the costly process of adopting a child from Russia found out Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law barring any future adoptions, canceling the ones in progress. NBC's Kerry Sanders reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

President Vladimir Putin signed a law on Friday that bans Americans from adopting Russian children and imposes other measures in retaliation for new U.S. legislation meant to punish Russian human rights abusers.

The law, which has ignited outrage among Russian liberals and children's rights advocates, enters into force on Jan. 1 and is likely to strain U.S.-Russia relations.

As well as banning U.S. adoptions, it will also outlaw some non-governmental organizations that receive U.S. funding and impose a visa ban and asset freeze on Americans accused of violating the rights of Russians abroad.

The law could block dozens of Russian children expected to be adopted by American families from leaving the country and cut off one of the main international routes for Russian children to leave orphanages that are often dismal. Russia is the single biggest source of adopted children in the United States, with more than 60,000 Russian children being taken in by Americans over the past two decades.

The bill is retaliation for an American law that calls for sanctions against Russians deemed to be human rights violators and part of an increasingly confrontational stance by the Kremlin against the West.

Related: Americans may lose right to adopt Russian children

Putin said U.S. authorities routinely let Americans suspected of violence toward Russian adoptees go unpunished ? a clear reference to Dima Yakovlev, a Russian toddler for whom the bill is named. The child was adopted by Americans and then died in 2008 after his father left him in a car in broiling heat for hours. The father was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Children's rights ombudsman Pavel Astakhov on Wednesday said that 46 children who were about to be adopted in the United States would remain in Russia if the bill came into effect. On Thursday, he petitioned the president to extend the ban to other countries.

John and Renee Thomas with their son, Jack, 7, who was adopted from Russia at the age of 3. Jack is hoping for his brother, Nikoly, now in a Russian orphanage, to join him in the United States.

Would-be adoptive parents in the United States are left hanging by Putin's signing of the bill, which was passed by Russian lawmakers last week.

Among them are John and Renee Thomas of Minnetonka, Minn., Kari Huus of NBC News reported.?The Thomases have already adopted Jack, 7, from Russia. When they found out he had a little brother, they began the process to try to adopt him, too. The wait has stretched to four years, and now the adoption may be in danger.?

"When Jack is asked about his family, he talks about his brother," John Thomas said. "He always asks, 'When is he coming home?' We just tell him we?re waiting for the call."

More: Adoption of little brother caught in US-Russia spat

UNICEF estimates that there are about 740,000 children without parental custody in Russia, while only 18,000 Russians are now waiting to adopt a child.

Russian President Vladamir Putin has said he'll sign a proposed law that would halt adoptions of Russian children to Americans. NBC's Duncan Golestani reports.

The U.S. State Department on Thursday repeated its opposition to the Russian measure.

"The welfare of children is simply too important to tie to the political aspects of our relationship," State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said. "Additionally, we are deeply troubled by the provisions in the bill that would restrict the ability of Russian civil society organizations to work with American partners." ?

Critics of the bill left dozens of stuffed toys and candles outside the parliament's lower and upper houses to express solidarity with Russian orphans.?

An online petition urging the Kremlin to scrap the bill garnered more than 100,000 Russian signatures.?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Bundesbanker calls for limits on bank lending to government

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The vice president of Germany's Bundesbank has proposed setting limits for how much banks can lend to governments and backing such exposures with adequate capital to make them less reliant on taxpayers' help in crisis times.

Sabine Lautenschlaeger, who is also a member of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision which wrote the new global banking standards known as Basel III, told Reuters current regulation was setting the wrong incentives.

During the debt crisis, banks especially in troubled euro zone countries like Spain and Italy increasingly bought government debt and under Basel III they don't have to set capital aside to counter possible default risks.

"In the medium term for sovereign debt, there should be limits for overall exposure and capital should be required, which adequately reflects the risk," Lautenschlaeger said. "Regulation so far is setting the wrong incentives."

"But it has to be done with caution, for example with transition periods, because credit institutions and states need time to adjust," she added. "In the end, such a step would strengthen banks' resilience and thereby markets' confidence."

Another step that would boost confidence would be a swift implementation of Basel III, which world leaders approved in late 2010 and that now needs to be put into domestic law.

"It is very important that Basel III is implemented as soon as possible, I would like it to be next year. Whether it will be summer or winter is not that important," she urged lawmakers.

Europe and the United States, the world's two largest banking markets, will miss the globally-agreed January deadline.

Lautenschlaeger said her U.S. colleagues in the Basel Committee had stressed that they wanted to implement Basel III, but they hadn't been able to give a date when they would do so.

LEGAL FOUNDATION

Lautenschlaeger's calls for a cap on banks' exposure to government debt echoes earlier comments by Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann, who had raised the issue back in November as a means to break the negative feedback loop between indebted states and troubled banks.

The planned banking union also aims to address the close tie by putting a new European banking supervision regime under the roof of the ECB, as well as with a scheme to wind down banks and a combined means of deposit protection to prevent bank runs.

Lautenschlaeger praised the agreement struck earlier this month to put the ECB in charge to directly police at least 150 of the euro zone's biggest banks from 2014 and intervene in smaller banks at the first sign of trouble.

But she questioned whether the new supervisory body's proposed operating structure was in line with EU law.

"To my understanding, the ECB Governing Council should only be able to approve or reject proposals made by the supervisory board; it should not be able to include own ideas. Beyond that an arbitration committee was introduced," she explained, adding that this was done to separate supervisory and monetary policy.

"It is questionable whether this is possible under EU law, and whether it is justified that the ECB Council will be responsible for administrative decisions without direct scope for influencing them," Lautenschlaeger said.

German magazine der Spiegel reported earlier this month that the Bundesbank had serious reservations about the legal framework.

Less Than 1 In 10 Americans Sleep Naked, Survey Finds

Americans are a bunch of prudes when they go to bed, according to a new study.

Less than one in 10, or eight percent, of Americans sleep naked, according to a poll of 3,700 people by linen and home d?cor company Anna's Linens. Reportedly, 74 percent of Americans wear pajamas to bed, and the rest wear "something else," according to the company, which is based in Costa Mesa, Calif.

Sadly, 65 percent said they get a "restful night's sleep" only three nights or less per week, and 47 percent said they share a bed with someone who snores. 74 percent of respondents said they sleep on their side, which leaves 16 percent who sleep on their stomachs, and 10 percent who sleep on their backs.

The company also found that many people don't remember their dreams. More than half of the respondents said they could recall less than a quarter of their dreams, while about 10 percent said they remembered nearly all their dreams from the previous night's sleep.

As for the nature of the dreams, nearly 70 percent felt their dreams were not as "interesting" as their friends' dreams. However, another 44 percent said their dreams were "more bizarre'' than their friends'.

And why, you ask, did a linen company conduct this poll? Here's a clue, from the CEO, Alan Gladstone.

"We were surprised eight percent of our respondents admitted to sleeping naked. For that group, we suggest our 100 percent Egyptian cotton sheets," Gladstone said. "They feel great against the skin."

However, there is one upside to the masses sleeping clothed. According to Travelodge, the incidence of naked sleepwalking, which occurs almost exclusively among its male guests, has increased sevenfold in the past year.

How to Real Estate Investors acquire thousands of properties ...

Syndication may let you get a lot of units, numerically. But when you bring in other people and their money, you're giving up returns. That said, the management fees from a syndicate are sometimes the ONLY money being made. Ask me about a mini-storage I'm stuck in!

What's the biggest key? Spend less than you make. Whether you're making $10 an hour or have a $200K a year job, you have to spend less than you make. Save the difference and invest it. Buy good investments (tough to do 100% of the time) and roll the returns back into your portfolio. Over time, it will begin to snowball.

No More Driveway Moments: NPR for iPad | iPad.AppStorm

How many times have you sat in the car with the engine turned off, so engrossed in an NPR radio story that you had to hear the end before going into your house? If you?re an NPR addict like me, you?ll kick yourself for waiting so long to get the NPR iPad app.

I spend less time driving a car these days and more time riding a bus, flying on a plane or working from home. The NPR iPad app is a great way to stay connected to my favorite news source, and it?s free! If you?re interested in an app that lets you live stream NPR radio anywhere there?s an Internet connection, keep playlists of stories for listening to later and read articles in a magazine-style format offline, keep reading ?

Like the article? You should subscribe and follow us on twitter.

Getting Started

Enter the world of NPR and find an easy-to-navigate home screen designed to embrace the intuitive functionality of the iPad environment. This is where the magazine-style format comes into play, and Stories are organized into three categories: News, Arts & Life, and Music. Swiping right and left takes you through a selection of the latest Stories, which update every time you open the app. The Topics button in the top right corner allows you to customize feeds to be updated automatically when an Internet connection is present, so that the content is available to read offline. It?s important to note that audio is not available offline, only written content.

The home screen shows stories in three categories: News, Arts & Life, and Music that you can navigate through by swiping left and right.

The home screen shows stories in three categories: News, Arts & Life, and Music that you can navigate through by swiping left and right.

On the bottom of the Home screen you?ll find a navigation bar with several options. Tap Hourly News to listen to the latest Hourly News update from NPR radio (usually less than five minutes). The pause, rewind and fast forward buttons on the far left of the navigation bar allow you to manipulate whatever audio is currently playing.

Stories

The Stories on the home screen are from NPR.org; all include a written transcript, and some include audio from radio programming. Don?t think NPR is denying you the radio experience here, instead look at it as bonus content you can experience offline. Not all content NPR produces is for the radio. If the story contains audio, you?ll see the Listen Now button. If you would prefer to listen later, just tap + Add to Playlist. Below these buttons are options for sharing the story via Twitter, Facebook or email.

Tap on a story to read the transcript or listen to audio if available. You can also add the audio to a playlist and listen later.

Tap on a story to read the transcript or listen to audio if available. You can also add the audio to a playlist and listen later.

While a story is playing, you can leave the app and check your email, browse the Internet, etc. Turn off the screen and listen while doing the dishes, lifting weights or whatever it is you?re up to. You can even pause the story, turn off your iPad completely and resume it later. At the bottom of each story is a More Stories button, which allows you to browse other stories in the same category without leaving the page.

Listening to NPR Radio

Go to the persistent navigation bar at the bottom of the screen and tap Programs for Directory of NPR radio shows, such as Science Friday or Fresh Air. Programs are different from Stories, in that they are audio only, containing no written transcript. Also, an Internet connection is required to listen to any audio on the app, but the photos and written transcripts of Stories can be viewed offline.

View Programs by Title or Topic by tapping the preferred option at the top of the page. Tap the audio button of a specific episode to listen, or add it to your Playlist for later. Select the heart shape next to a Program title to Favorite it, moving it to the top of your program list.

Programs by Title are arrange by the program name, with favorites appearing at the top of the screen.

Programs by Title are arrange by the program name, with favorites appearing at the top of the screen.

View the Programs by Topic and you can Favorite radio Programs related to topics such as Food, Science, Technology, etc. The Favorite function is good because it personalizes the app, arranging content topics you?re interested in at the top of the page.

View Programs by Topic to prioritize the list based on your own interests, like I've done with Food, Books and Opinion.

View Programs by Topic to prioritize the list based on your own interests, like I?ve done with Food, Books and Opinion.

Whether you?re viewing by Title or Topic, the app alerts you if Programs are available to live stream with a red box labeled, On Air. Tap the box to find a local station and live stream the Program.

The NPR app alerts you to programs that are available to live stream. Tap the button to find a local station and listen live.

The NPR app alerts you to programs that are available to live stream. Tap the button to find a local station and listen live.

Find Your Favorite NPR Station

Tap the Stations button on the persistent navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to search for your Favorite Stations either by entering your Zip, City, State or Call Letters or by the Find Nearest, which uses your current location. This function is great for keeping a list of your favorite stations or finding local news while traveling.

I'm searching for my favorite local station in Denver, Colorado.

I?m searching for my favorite local station in Denver, Colorado.

Once the list appears, tap the heart next to a Station to make it a Favorite. Your Favorite Stations can always be found by tapping the Stations button.

Customize Your Playlist

One of the best parts of this app is the ability to collect and store audio stories in a Playlist. Find the Playlist button on the persistent navigation bar at the bottom of the screen ? it?s the box with lines and dots. If you?ve added Programs to listen to, you?ll see a red circle with a number in it as a reminder.

Collect audio programs to listen to later in the Playlist.

Collect audio programs to listen to later in the Playlist.

Items are organized in two categories: New and History. If you?ve listened to a Program but haven?t deleted it, the audio is saved under History so you can refer to it again later. Newly added Programs appear at the top of the list. Tap the Edit button to rearrange the order of Programs by tapping and dragging, or to delete Programs by tapping the red circle. It?s great to be able to save up to 99 Programs in the Playlist, but disappointing that only the audio is saved. Even if a Program contained a written transcript, you can?t access it in the Playlist. It would be nice to see this functionality added to the app. Also, it?s inconvenient that Programs in the Playlist can only be deleted one at a time ? no bulk action for the Delete button. NPR recognizes this and has intentions to correct it in future updates.

Conclusion

NPR is a nonprofit public media company offering a free app to share content from their website and radio programs in a rich, magazine-style format on the iPad. NPR devotees who don?t spend much time in a car listening to radio will appreciate the regularly updating news feeds and live radio streaming, as well as the ability to personalize the app, prioritizing favorite programs and collecting stories in the playlist.

The biggest flaw with the NPR app is its tendency to crash occasionally, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. A mixture of photographs, audio and written transcripts displayed in an easy to navigate mobile environment allows users a bird?s eye view of the content. The NPR app brings the content to life, making it easier to enjoy the unique stories and engaging news coverage that NPR is known for.

Fiscal Cliff: Obama Returning to DC

HONOLULU, Hawaii - With the country barreling towards the "fiscal cliff," President Obama is interrupting his Hawaiian holiday vacation to return to the gridlock in Washington.

The president will depart Hawaii for Washington late Wednesday, the White House announced today. The first lady and daughters, Malia and Sasha, will remain on their vacation.

Obama told reporters last week that he is a "hopeless optimist" and continues to believe a budget deal can be reached before broad tax increases and steep spending cuts kick in on Jan. 1, threatening to plunge the nation back into a recession. House Speaker John Boehner has admitted "God only knows" the solution to the standoff.

With the deadline less than a week away, lawmakers are also due to be back in Washington on Thursday. Obama's return was expected. He told reporters at the White House Friday that he would "see you next week."

The president spent Christmas with friends and family at his vacation house in Kailua, a cozy beach town on the east coast of Oahu.

The gunman fired at the firefighters when they arrived shortly after 5:30 a.m. at the blaze near the Lake Ontario shore in Webster, town Police Chief Gerald Pickering said. The first Webster police officer who arrived chased the suspect and exchanged gunfire with him, authorities said.

"It does appear it was a trap" for the first responders to the fire, Pickering said at a news conference.

The gunman, William Spengler, had served more than 17 years in prison for beating his 92-year-old grandmother to death in 1980 at the house next to where Monday's attack happened, Pickering said. Spengler, 62, was paroled in 1998 and had led a quiet life since, authorities said. Convicted felons are not allowed to possess weapons.

Police say he set fire to a car and house to lure firefighters to his home on the shore of Lake Ontario. When they arrived, he opened fire from outdoors, probably with a rifle and from atop an earthen berm.

"He laid in wait with armament and shot first responders," Pickering said. Police don't know a motive yet.

Two firefighters, one of whom was also a town police lieutenant, died at the scene, and two others were hospitalized. A fifth man who was passing by was also injured. The police officer who exchanged gunfire with Spengler and "in all likelihood saved many lives," Pickering said.

Seven houses were destroyed in the blaze, Pickering said, and police have not been able to get inside the houses to determine if there are any more victims. They said Spengler's 67-year-old sister Cheryl Spengler was unaccounted for. He lived in the house with his sister and mother, Arline, who died in October.

Bieber's Hamster Giveaway Causes Furry Furor

ht pac justin bieber jp 121220 main Biebers Hamster Giveaway Causes Furry Furor

Justin Bieber bonds with his former pet, Pac-the-hamster. Image credit: Twitter @PacBieber.

Here?s a story that will give you paws. Or at least it has paws.

According to TMZ, Justin Bieber gave an unsuspecting fan an early Christmas present by unloading his pet hamster, named PAC, on her during a recent concert.

?That?s all you,? Bieber can be heard shouting to the girl over the screams of the crowd as the incident was captured on?grainy video. ?You gotta take care of PAC.?

The girl, identified as Victoria Blair, age 18, screamed back, ?I will take care of him!?

The?California Hamster Association?is not amused. They simply cannot belieb the pop star acted so irresponsibly.

First of all, yes. There really is a California Hamster Association (CHA). And second, as David Imber, an adviser and spokesman for the organization pointed out ? what Bieber did was not cool.

?No doubt Justin Bieber meant well in delighting his adoring fan with the gift of his hamster, but without realizing it he was practicing a form of animal cruelty,? Imber said.

?We have subsequently read that the recipient is attempting to be responsible about caring for the animal, but absent any other indication, in general it is extremely likely that this hamster would have been harmed,? Imber continued. ?No pet, large or small, should ever be ?gifted? to an unknowing recipient.?

Beiber could not immediately be reached for comment by ABC News but Blair told ABC News that PAC is doing fine.

If you are considering giving the gift of a hamster this year, the CHA urges using some common sense.

This means never surprising someone with any sort of creature, let alone something as sensitive and fragile as a cute and furry little hamster. Without discussing it with them first, you don?t know if someone has the means or desire to provide proper care for the animal (as with any animal), including suitable housing, plenty of food and water, and one of those squeaky exercise wheels. And definitely, under no circumstances should you hand over a pet to the recipient at a concert.

Imber worried that most people don?t realize hamsters actually?don?t make?great pets for little kids even though they are inexpensive and reproduce in great numbers.

?They do not typically sit calmly in one?s lap, but roam incessantly ? the reason we give them wheels ? and they have a very short life span of fewer than 1,000 days,? he said.

If you do decide to go forward with a pet present, remind the new owner that they can leave it in the care of a shelter or animal rescue center should they no longer wish to keep it ? again, keeping in mind that any handoff should not occur in the midst of a screaming mob of adolescent girls.

But anyway, three holiday cheers for PAC?s new situation. Our little ham-star?doesn?t?appear doomed to die a horrible death as the CHA initially feared. In fact, he seems to be thriving like the tiny rodent royalty he is, even tossing out the occasional tweet to his nearly 46,000 followers.

?Yes, it?s true.?@victoriablair21?is ?my? new owner, she takes care of me so don?t worry,? said one of his tweets that posted a few days after he was handed over to Blair.

It was hashtagged, #happyhamster.

Waist circumference predicts long-term cardio ... - Preventive Health

A new long-term study published by researchers at the University of Georgia, the Menzies Research Institute in Hobart, Australia and the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute in Melbourne, Australia suggests that waist circumference, rather than the commonly used body mass index measure, is the best clinical measure to predict a child?s risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes later in life.

The researchers, whose results appear in the early online edition of the International Journal of Obesity, found that children with high waist circumference values (in the top 25 percent for their age and sex) were five to six times more likely than children with low waist circumferences (in the bottom 25 percent) to develop metabolic syndrome by early adulthood. Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of key cardiovascular risk factors and is associated with an increased risk of subsequent coronary artery disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.

?We wanted to identify which clinical measure of childhood body composition best predicts long-term cardio-metabolic health risks,? said study lead author Michael Schmidt, an assistant professor in the UGA department of kinesiology, part of the College of Education. ?We were able to compare a wide range of body composition measures and found that waist circumference seems to be the best measure to predict subsequent risk.?

Schmidt said that the findings should help clinicians measuring body composition identify children most at risk for future health problems in a simple and cost effective manner.

The study used data collected as part of a 20-year follow up of 2,188 Australians who participated in a national childhood health and fitness survey in 1985, when aged 7 to 15 years. As adults, they then attended one of 34 study clinics held across Australia between 2004 and 2006, where they underwent a range of health and fitness assessments. Most prior studies of the long-term consequences of childhood obesity have used the body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height, as the primary measure of childhood obesity, Schmidt explained. While useful, BMI doesn?t distinguish between fat and non-fat weight or indicate where the fat is located. In contrast, waist circumference measurements capture the amount of fat located centrally in the body, a location that prior studies have shown to be particularly detrimental to cardio-metabolic health. ?This likely explains the stronger associations we observed between waist circumference and adult metabolic syndrome,? added Schmidt.

The study is one of the first of its kind to compare directly the usefulness of different body composition measures in predicting long-term cardiovascular risk, said Schmidt. In addition, prior studies that examined the extent to which childhood obesity predicts cardiovascular health in later life were conducted among historical cohorts of children lacking the extreme body composition values seen in children now. Schmidt said that while obesity levels in 1985 Australian children were also not as extreme as today?s children, the study participants were exposed to all of the factors leading to the increased rates of obesity in today?s young adults, such as easy access to fast food and a more sedentary lifestyle.

While Schmidt recognizes that introducing waist circumference measurement in schools is controversial because of potential stigmatization, he said he feels it provides an opportunity for the early identification of children at higher risk for future health problems due to excess body fat.

?I think parents would want to know if their child was five to six times more likely to have early cardio-metabolic health problems,? said Schmidt. ?The study shows that the increased rates of obesity in contemporary children are going to have long-term consequences. We can expect that the children of today will have higher rates of diabetes and early cardiovascular disease and that these problems will begin earlier in life.?

Silence, ringing of bells to honor Newtown shooting victims

NEWTOWN, Conn./WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Many Americans will remember the victims of the Newtown, Connecticut, school massacre with a moment of silence on Friday, just before a powerful U.S. gun rights lobbying group plunges into the national debate over gun control.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy called for residents of his state to observe the moment at 9:30 a.m. EST (1430 GMT) to mark a week since a 20-year-old gunman killed his mother and then stormed Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where he shot to death 20 children and six adults before killing himself.

Malloy's fellow governors in Maine, Illinois, Michigan and several other states called on residents to follow suit with a moment of silence and to ring bells to remember the dead. The National Cathedral in Washington plans to ring its bell 28 times as part of an interfaith memorial.

"We have the moral obligation to stand for and with the victims of gun violence and to work to end it," said Reverend Gary Hall, dean of Washington National Cathedral, who called on Americans to pray "that we may have courage to act, so that the murderous violence done on Friday may never be repeated."

The company that operates the Nasdaq stock exchange said its operations would observe a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., although market will open trading at that time as usual.

The observances will be held not long before the National Rifle Association, the largest U.S. gun rights group and one with powerful ties to Washington politicians, begins a media campaign to become part of the gun control debate prompted by the stunning slaughter of 20 children, all 6 or 7 years old.

Laws restricting gun ownership are controversial in the United States, a nation with a strong culture of individual gun ownership. Hundreds of millions of weapons are in private hands.

About 11,100 Americans died in gun-related killings in 2011, not including suicides, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The NRA remained quiet for four days after the Newtown slaughter, citing "common decency." It released a short statement on Tuesday saying it was "prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again."

The group scheduled a news conference for 10:45 a.m. (1545 GMT) on Friday in Washington. NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre planned to appear on the NBC television talk show "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

Some U.S. lawmakers called for swift passage of an assault weapons ban.

Vice President Joe Biden convened a new White House task force on Thursday charged by President Barack Obama with finding ways to quell violence.

"We have to have a comprehensive way in which to respond to the mass murder of our children that we saw in Connecticut," Biden told the group, which included Attorney General Eric Holder, Thomas Nee, president of the National Association of Police Organizations, and other officials.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, used a military-style assault rifle and police said he carried hundreds of bullets in high-capacity magazines, as well as two handguns. The weapons were legally purchased and registered to his mother, Nancy, his first victim.

By Thursday, funeral services had been held for more than half of the 27 people Lanza killed last week.

Newtown school officials said that Friday would be a shortened day for students heading into the Christmas break.

Reflecting a heightened state of alert at schools across the United States, a school district near Boise, Idaho, canceled planned assemblies at a number of its 50 schools after receiving a rash of threats that suggested "something bad" would happen on Friday, Meridian school spokesman Eric Exline said.

"The event last Friday in Connecticut has unnerved people in a lot of ways," he said.

The New Milford school district, near Newtown, canceled Friday classes "on the advice of the New Milford Police Department" but did not offer any further explanation.

In Florida, a 13-year-old student was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly posted a Facebook message threatening to "bring a gun to school tomorrow and shoot everyone," said the St. Lucie County Sheriff's office on Florida's east coast.

Police said the teen did not have any weapons and posed no threat to local schools. He was charged with making a written threat and is being held at a local Juvenile Detention Center.

Hot spots draw believers, but not doomsday

As the sun rose from time zone to time zone across the world on Friday, there was still no sign of the world's end ? but that didn't stop those convinced that a 5,125-year Mayan calendar predicts the apocalypse from gathering at some of the world's purported survival hot spots.

Many of the esoterically inclined expected a new age of consciousness ? others wanted a party. But, in some places said to offer salvation from the end, fewer people showed up than officials had predicted ? much to the disappointment of vendors hoping to sell souvenirs.

Here are some key places being marked by the fascination over doomsday rumors:

MEXICO

In an area of Mexico that was once the ancient Mayan heartland, spiritualists gathered in the darkness before dawn on Friday to prepare white clothes, drums, conch shells and incense. They believed the sunrise would herald the birth of a new and better age as a vast cycle in the Mayan calendar comes to an end.

Many people who came to Yucatan for the occasion were already calling it "a new sun" and "a new era."

FRANCE

According to one rumor, a rocky mountain in the French Pyrenees will be the sole place on Earth to escape destruction. A giant UFO and aliens are said to be waiting under the mountain, ready to burst through and spirit those nearby to safety. But there is bad news for those seeking salvation: French gendarmes, some on horseback, blocked outsiders from reaching the Bugarach peak and its village of some 200 people.

Eric Freysselinard, head of local government, said the security forces had "partially stopped the new age enthusiasts as well as curious people from coming to the area."

Meanwhile, some Bugarach residents dressed up like aliens, with tinfoil costumes and funnels and fake antenna on their heads, strolling around their village Friday to make light of the rumored UFO prophecy.

RUSSIA

Doomsday rumors have prompted some people across Russia to stock up on candles, water, canned foods and other non-perishable foods. The apocalypse has proven a good business, with some shops selling survival aid packages that include soap and vodka.

In Moscow, salvation has also been promised in the underground bunker for the former Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ? with a 50 percent refund if nothing happens. An underground stay was originally priced at 50,000 rubles ($1,625) but dropped to 15,000 ($490) a week ahead of the feared end.

The bunker, located 65 meters (210 feet) below ground, was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Now home to a small museum, it has an independent electricity supply, water and food ? but no more room, because the museum has already sold out all 1,000 tickets.

BRITAIN

Hundreds of people have converged on Stonehenge for an "End of the World" party that coincides with the Winter Solstice.

Arthur Uther Pendragon, Britain's best-known druid, said he was anticipating a much larger crowd than usual at Stonehenge this year. But he doesn't agree that the world is ending, noting that he and fellow druids believe that things happen in cycles.

"We're looking at it more as a new beginning than an end," he said. "We're looking at new hope."

Meanwhile, end-of-days parties will be held across London on Friday. One event billed as a "last supper club" is offering a three-course meal served inside an "ark."

SERBIA

Some Serbs are saying to forget that sacred mountain in the French Pyrenees. The place to be Friday is Mount Rtanj, a pyramid-shaped peak in Serbia already drawing cultists.

According to legend, the mountain once swallowed an evil sorcerer who will be released on doomsday in a ball of fire that will hit the mountain top. The inside of the mountain will then open up, becoming a safe place to hide as the sorcerer goes on to destroy the rest of the world. In the meantime, some old coal mine shafts have been opened up as safe rooms.

On Friday a New Age group called "The Spirit of Rtanj" was holding a conference there. Participants, however, said they expect not the end of time but the start of a new time cycle. Locals turned out to sell brandy and herbs.

"There will be no tragedy, no doomsday," said resident Dalibor Jovic. "It was supposed to happen at 12:12 and I think that time has passed. So, we can now go on with our lives and be happy to be alive."

TURKEY

A small Turkish village known for its wines, Sirince, has also been touted as the only place after Bugarach that would escape the world's end. But on Friday journalists and security officials outnumbered cultists. This outcome disappointed local business people who had prepared a range of doomsday products to sell, including a specially labeled Doomsday wine and Turkish delight candy whose "best before" date was Dec. 21, 2012. One restaurant prepared a special "last meal" menu that included a "heaven kebab" and "forbidden fruit dessert."

ITALY

Another spot said to be spared: Cisternino, a beautiful small town in southern Italy in an area of trulli, traditional dry stone huts with conical roofs. The notion that Cisternino could be a safe haven at world's end derives from an Indian guru, Babaji, who said "Cisternino will become an island" at world's end. His followers built a community in Cisternino centered on an ashram built in 1979. Hotel bookings are up this weekend.

Mayor Donato Baccaro told the AP that the beauty of the place has inspired many foreigners to live there. "This confirms that this place has a special energy," he said.

CHINA

A fringe Christian group has been spreading rumors about the world's impending end, prompting Chinese authorities to detain more than 500 people this week and seize leaflets, video discs, books and other material.

Those detained are reported to be members of the group Almighty God, also called Eastern Lightning, which preaches that Jesus has reappeared as a woman in central China. Authorities in the province of Qinghai say they are waging a "severe crackdown" on the group, accusing it of attacking the Communist Party and the government.

U.S.

Dozens of Michigan schools canceled classes for thousands of students to cool off rumored threats of violence and problems related to doomsday. The fears were exacerbated by the recent shooting at a Connecticut elementary school, which "changed all of us," the school system in Genesee County said. "Canceling school is the right thing to do."

Selena is a three-year old with what her mother described as a "natural, golden skin tone." Her mother was so in love with Selena's tone, she didn't want it to change.

So to ensure that tone stays exactly the way it is, Selena isn't allowed to go outside so she won't tan. The show even spotlighted footage of Selena with her nose pressed against the window, watching her brothers outside playing basketball.

"She has to stay inside. She follows the proper protocol," her mother said.

But Selena wasn't happy to be following those orders. "I really want to play outside. Like my brothers," she lamented.

Obama sets January deadline for gun control proposals; Biden to spearhead effort

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Spurred by a horrific elementary school shooting, President Barack Obama vowed to send Congress new policy proposals for reducing gun violence by January.

"This time, the words need to lead to action," Obama said Wednesday. He tasked Vice President Joe Biden with leading an administration-wide effort to create the new recommendations and pledged to push for their implementation without delay.

The president, who exerted little political capital on gun control despite a series of mass shootings in his first term, bristled at suggestions that he had been silent on the issue during his first four years in office. But he acknowledged that Friday's deadly shooting had been "a wake-up call for all of us."

Twenty children and six adults were killed when a man carrying a military-style rifle stormed Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., Friday morning.

The president also called on Congress Wednesday to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and to pass legislation that would close the gun show "loophole," which allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check. Obama also said he wanted Congress to pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips.

Shattered Conn. town buries more children, teachers as residents try to make sense of tragedy

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? For a third straight day Wednesday, funeral processions rolled through a grieving Connecticut town trying to make sense of the massacre of 20 first-graders and six adults in an elementary school less than two weeks before Christmas.

A 7-year-old boy who had dreamed of being a firefighter and a heroic first-grade teacher who died while trying to shield students from the carnage were among the victims laid to rest in what has become an unrelenting cycle of sorrow and loss.

"The first few days, all you heard was helicopters. Now at my office all I hear is the rumble of motorcycle escorts and funeral processions going back and forth throughout the day," said Dr. Joseph Young, an optometrist who said he had already been to one funeral and would be going to several more.

Students in Newtown returned to school Tuesday, except those from Sandy Hook Elementary, where a gunman armed with a military-style assault rifle slaughtered the children and six teachers and administrators last Friday. He also killed his mother at her home.

Students at Sandy Hook, which serves kindergarten through fourth grade, will resume classes in a formerly shuttered school in a neighboring community in January.

Obama says he, Boehner 'pretty close' on terms of a deal; White House threatens veto on Plan B

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Optimistic despite a tightening deadline, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he and House Speaker John Boehner are "pretty close" to a grand fiscal deal to avoid a first-of-the-year shock to the economy, but that congressional Republicans "keep on finding ways to say no as opposed to finding ways to say yes."

Obama cast a resolution to the "fiscal cliff" as a matter of political will. He said in the aftermath of the massacre of school children in Connecticut, the nation deserves a compromise by its political leaders.

"If this past week has done anything, it should just give us some perspective," he said. And he urged lawmakers to "peel off the partisan war paint" and strike a deal.

Obama spoke to reporters at the White House after announcing an administration-wide response to Friday's shooting at an elementary school in Newtown that killed 20 first-graders and six adults.

His comments came shortly after the White House threatened to veto Boehner's backup plan for averting the "fiscal cliff." Boehner's measure, a so-called Plan B, would block tax increases from being triggered Jan. 1 on everyone but those whose incomes exceed $1 million.

US Army to seek death penalty for soldier charged in Afghan massacre; lawyer slams decision

SEATTLE (AP) ? The U.S. Army said Wednesday it will seek the death penalty against the soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan villagers in a predawn rampage in March, a decision his lawyer called "totally irresponsible."

The announcement followed a pretrial hearing last month for Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, 39, who faces premeditated murder and other charges in the attack on two villages in southern Afghanistan.

The slayings drew such angry protests that the U.S. temporarily halted combat operations in Afghanistan, and it was three weeks before American investigators could reach the crime scenes.

Prosecutors said Bales left his remote southern Afghanistan base early on March 11, attacked one village and returned to the base, then slipped away again to attack another nearby compound. Of the 16 people killed, nine were children.

No date has been set for Bales' court martial, which will be held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Seattle.

In wake of Conn. shooting, parents buy armored backpacks for kids and gun enthusiasts stock up

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? The reaction to the Connecticut school shooting can be seen in gun stores and self-defense retailers across the nation: Anxious parents are fueling sales of armored backpacks for children while firearms enthusiasts are stocking up on assault rifles in anticipation of tighter gun control measures.

A spike in gun sales is common after a mass shooting, but the Connecticut tragedy has generated record sales in many states. Colorado set a single-day record for gun background check requests the day after the Connecticut mass shootings, and some online retailers are removing assault rifles from websites in part because of diminishing supplies.

Nevada saw more requests for background checks in the days after the shooting than any other weekend this year. Some gun shop owners are even holding back on sales, anticipating only more interest and value after President Barack Obama on Wednesday tasked his administration with creating concrete proposals to reduce gun violence.

Robert Akers, a Rapid City, S.D., gun seller specializing in assault-style rifles, said he has about 50 of the weapons in stock but he's not actively trying to sell them and has even turned off his phone.

"It's a madhouse," said Akers, owner of Rapid Fire Firearms. "Any time they have one of these shootings or an election, it gets that way. I don't even want to sell them right now because I won't be able to replace them for probably six months. ... The price is only going to go up higher."

State Department security chief, 2 deputies, resign after damning Benghazi attack report

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Three State Department officials resigned under pressure Wednesday, less than a day after a damning report blamed management failures for a lack of security at the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, where militants killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans on Sept. 11.

The resignations came as lawmakers expressed anger and frustration over the findings of an independent review panel, and the State Department struggled to find a balance between protecting its diplomats while allowing them to do their jobs connecting with people in high-risk posts.

Obama administration officials said those who had stepped down were Eric Boswell, the assistant secretary of state for diplomatic security, Charlene Lamb, the deputy assistant secretary responsible for embassy security, and Raymond Maxwell, the deputy assistant secretary of state who oversees the Maghreb nations of Libya, Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss personnel matters publicly.

Some of the three may have the option of being reassigned to other duties, the officials said.

The department declined immediate comment on the resignation of the officials whose decisions had been criticized in the unclassified version of the Accountability Review Board's report that was released late Tuesday.

Robert Bork would have changed Supreme Court; his nomination defeat altered judicial selection

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Conservatives wanted Robert H. Bork on the Supreme Court. They wound up with Anthony Kennedy, the key vote in reaffirming a woman's right to an abortion.

The fight over Bork's failed Supreme Court nomination redefined the Senate confirmation process and made him a symbol of the nation's culture wars. The political battle that erupted over Bork has now, years later, expanded to stall nominees for far lesser judicial posts, and nominees themselves have curbed their responses to questioning to avoid his fate.

Had Bork, who died Wednesday at age 85, prevailed and become a justice, his vote would have dramatically changed the court.

President Ronald Reagan's choice of Bork in 1987 to replace Justice Lewis Powell was intended to cement conservative control of the court for decades. And Bork gave both his supporters and opponents every reason to believe, through scholarly writings and judicial decisions, that he would be a consistent conservative vote on a range of key issues. That would include, perhaps most importantly, one day delivering the decisive blow to undo the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that declared a woman's right to an abortion.

He was a staunch critic of the court's Griswold v. Connecticut decision in 1965 that found a right to privacy in the Constitution that trumped a state law prohibiting even married couples from using birth control. The ruling was a precursor to decisions in favor of abortion rights and gay rights, including some authored by Kennedy.

New Syria rebel chief says he's forging force of 120,000 men in final push against Assad

MAARET MISREEN, Syria (AP) ? The new Syrian rebel chief said he's been moving between safe houses since taking up command, even changing quarters twice in one night when he feared regime spies.

Grappling with largely untrained and at times undisciplined fighters, Salim Idris said in an interview that he is trying to turn local militias into a united force of some 120,000 men for a final push against President Bashar Assad.

The challenges keep him awake at night, said Idris, a former general who defected from the Syrian army five months ago and was chosen as rebel chief of staff in a meeting of several hundred field commanders this month in Turkey.

Idris is "very afraid" a cornered Assad might unleash chemical weapons on the fighters. He said old friends of his still in the regime have warned him that the military, which already fired several Scuds, is training more ready-to-fire missiles on rebel strongholds in Syria's northwest.

Logistics also pose a nightmare. The 55-year-old, who studied in Germany and taught electronics at a Syrian military college, communicates by Skype with his officers. With power out most of the time, he's had important conversations cut short by a dying laptop battery, said Idris, who spoke with a professorial demeanor and wore a black suit during a brief break from the war zone.

Poor but positive: Latin Americans happiest, Singaporeans and Armenians least upbeat

MEXICO CITY (AP) ? The world's happiest people aren't in Qatar, the richest country by most measures. They aren't in Japan, the nation with the highest life expectancy. Canada, with its chart-topping percentage of college graduates, doesn't make the top 10.

A poll released Wednesday of nearly 150,000 people around the world says seven of the world's 10 countries with the most upbeat attitudes are in Latin America.

Many of the seven do poorly in traditional measures of well-being, like Guatemala, a country torn by decades of civil war followed by waves of gang-driven criminality that give it one of the highest homicide rates in the world. Guatemala sits just above Iraq on the United Nations' Human Development Index, a composite of life expectancy, education and per capita income. But it ranks seventh in positive emotions.

Gallup Inc. asked about 1,000 people in each of 148 countries last year if they were well-rested, had been treated with respect, smiled or laughed a lot, learned or did something interesting and felt feelings of enjoyment.

The people least likely to report positive emotions lived in Singapore, the wealthy and orderly city-state that ranks among the most developed in the world. Other wealthy countries also sat surprisingly low on the list. Germany and France tied with the poor African state of Somaliland for 47th place.

Neil Armstrong, Dick Clark, Whitney Houston, Joe Paterno among those who died in 2012

Neil Armstrong would always be taking that first step onto the moon, and Dick Clark was forever "the world's oldest teenager." Some of the notables who died in 2012 created images in our minds that remained unchanged over decades.

Sadly, for others an established image was shattered by a fall from grace. Whitney Houston ruled as a queen of pop music, but years of hard living harmed her voice while erratic behavior and a troubled marriage took a toll on her image. And Joe Paterno, Penn State's longtime coach, won more games than anyone in major college football, but was ultimately fired amid a molestation scandal involving an assistant coach that scarred his reputation.

Some whose deaths we noted weren't known by image or even name but by contributions that changed our lives ? like Eugene Polley, inventor of the first wireless TV remote control, and Norman Joseph Woodland, co-inventor of the bar code that labels nearly every product in stores. Other scientists who died in 2012 included Lowell Randall, Martin Fleischmann, F. Sherwood Rowland, George Cowan and Bernard Lovell.

Among the political figures who died were George McGovern, Democrat presidential nominee who lost to Richard Nixon in a historic landslide, and ex-Sen. Arlen Specter, the outspoken Pennsylvania centrist. Others from the world of politics: Bill Janklow, Norodom Sihanouk, Charles "Chuck" Colson, Warren B. Rudman, Andrew Breitbart and Miguel de la Madrid.

The year also saw the deaths of a number of TV stars including Larry Hagman, who played oil baron J.R. Ewing on "Dallas."
