A look at recent tech-industry earnings

Here is a summary of recent earnings and reports for selected technology companies and what they reveal about the state of spending and the overall economy:

April 6: Samsung Electronics Co. says it is expecting a record operating profit of $5.1 billion for the first quarter. It says the result would be a 97 percent rise from its operating profit a year earlier. Samsung estimated that its first quarter sales rose 21.6 percent from a year earlier. More details will come when Samsung releases its full quarterly results.

April 12: Google Inc. reports adjusted earnings and adjusted revenue that beat expectations. Google's revenue was helped by a 39 percent increase in "paid clicks," but the prices of its search-driven text ads continued to decline. CEO Larry Page called the first quarter "very strong," but acknowledgehd there's more work to do.

April 17: Yahoo Inc.'s first-quarter earnings show signs of modest progress under recently hired CEO Scott Thompson. Net income grew 28 percent from the same time last year and exceeded expectations. Revenue grew less than 1 percent, but represented a breakthrough because the company's revenue has been steadily falling for years.

IBM Corp. says first-quarter net income grew 7 percent, helped by strong profit margins in its services business and strong revenue growth across its software and services businesses. Revenue was flat overall because of declines in the hardware and financing segments, and revenue fell short of analysts' expectations. IBM increases its full-year guidance to at least $15 per share, above the $14.93 expected by analysts.

Intel Corp. says its net income in the first quarter fell 13 percent as spending on research and marketing rose while sales were flat.

April 18: EBay Inc. says its first-quarter net income grew 20 percent thanks to higher revenue from its PayPal business and brisk sales at its e-commerce websites. The results beat Wall Street's expectations.

Mobile phone chipmaker Qualcomm Inc. says its quarterly profit more than doubled as strong demand for smartphones boosted its sales; but it expects costs to increase as it makes more chips.

April 19: Microsoft Corp. fares better than analysts anticipated in its latest quarter, boosted by a surprising rise in sales of its Windows operating system for personal computers

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. reports adjusted earnings and revenue that beat Wall Street's expectations. AMD's revenue forecast for the current quarter was at $1.59 billion to $1.68 billion, while analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting $1.59 billion.

Nokia Corp. reports a huge net loss, one of the company's worst ever quarters, and blames tougher-than-expected competition. It has faced stiff competition from the likes of Apple Inc.'s iPhone and handset makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software.

April 23: Netflix Inc. says it suffered its first quarterly loss in seven years, but the setback was far smaller than analysts expected. Netflix had rising licensing fees and a bill for an international expansion. Netflix predicted that it would make money during the current quarter. Still, Wall Street was worried about tougher competition. Skittish investors keyed on a second-quarter forecast that calls for a slowdown in subscriber growth during the spring and early summer.

Chipmaker Texas Instruments Inc. says first-quarter net income fell 60 percent from a year ago as revenue shrank. But the results still beat analysts' expectations.

Xerox Corp. says first-quarter net income fell 4 percent as the company spent more on building its services business, which now makes up more than half the company's revenue. The company says it's investing in new offerings and long-term contracts in order to increase growth. In the short term, that has hurt profitability.

April 24: Apple Inc. reported blowout iPhone sales ? 35 million in the latest quarter, almost twice as many as it sold a year ago and above analyst expectations. Net income nearly doubled to $11.6 billion, and revenue was up 59 percent at $39.2 billion. IPad sales came in below analyst expectations, at 11.8 million units. But that was still two and a half times as many as it sold in the same quarter a year ago.

April 25: Motorola Solutions Inc., which sells communications equipment to government and corporate customers, says first-quarter net income declined from a year ago, when the company recorded a large tax-related gain. Revenue grew thanks to strong demand from the company's government customers.

April 26: Amazon.com Inc. reports strong quarterly earnings and says its Kindle Fire tablet computer remains its best-selling item. However, its outlook for revenue growth was slower than expected.

Online games company Zynga Inc. reports adjusted earnings of 6 cents a share, a penny better than what Wall Street expected. Revenue grew 32 percent.

April 27: A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fueled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer-electronics industry. The South Korean company outshined handset rivals such as Nokia Corp. Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

May 1: Mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. reports a slightly larger net loss in the first quarter as expenses grew more than revenue. Motorola says it still expects its acquisition by Google to close by the end of June. The deal still needs to be approved by authorities in China.

May 3: LinkedIn Corp. says its first-quarter net income more than doubled, and its revenue doubled from a year ago. Adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. During the quarter, revenue grew across the company's divisions. The business-networking company also announces plans to buy presentation-sharing website SlideShare for $118.8 million.

May 9: Cisco Systems Inc. says its quarterly earnings surged 20 percent in the latest sign that a recently completed overhaul is paying off for the world's largest maker of computer-networking equipment. However, Cisco raised the specter of a sharp slowdown in technology spending, rattling investors already fretting about the economy's fragile condition. Cisco made a sobering forecast for the current quarter and traced it to skittish customers who are waiting longer to close deals and spending less money because of growing uncertainty about the economy, particularly in Europe and India.

May 14: Online deals company Groupon Inc. says it had a smaller net loss and sharply higher revenue in the first quarter, helped by increased demand from a growing customer base.

May 17: Salesforce.com Inc., which makes Web-based business software, says it had a net loss in the first quarter, but adjusted profit and revenue beat expectations. It raises its forecast for full-year results.

May 22: Dell Inc. reports disappointing first-quarter results and forecasts weak sales in the current quarter. The computer maker says sales to big businesses, consumers and the public sector decreased.

May 23: Hewlett-Packard Co. says it will cut 27,000 workers, or 8 percent of its work force, by October 2014. News of the cutbacks overshadowed the release of HP's latest quarterly results. The company's earnings and revenue were both better than analysts projected.

June 18: Oracle Corp says net income increased 8 percent and topped analysts' predictions. Oracle also posted a 7 percent gain in its sales of new software licenses, indicating there is still strong demand for technology that helps businesses automate their administrative tasks.

June 19: Software company Adobe Systems Inc. says net income in the latest quarter fell 2 percent, amid higher expenses. Revenue grew with strong sales of its Creative Suite product.

Thursday: Research in Motion Ltd. reports triple bad news: It's cutting 5,000 jobs, or about 30 percent of its workforce. It's delaying the launch of BlackBerry 10 yet again, to the first quarter of next year. It also reported worse results for its latest quarter, which ended June 2, than analysts had expected.

This is coming from someone who would purge because of being bullied for my weight, I wouldn?t comment if i didn?t know anything about eating disorders. P.S. I love your video?s on self harm, they are really helping me, thank you <3

Orange says business survival linked to energy consumption

Telecommunications giant Orange has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions by 20% and energy consumption by 15% between 2006 and 2020.

The company's latest Corporate Social Responsibility Report declares that, in a world with limited natural resources, companies will only be able to ensure their long-term success by controlling their energy consumption and reducing the environmental impact of the life cycles of their products and services.

"For Orange, that means reducing the environmental impact of our operations by lowering greenhouse gas emissions," states the report.

"Optimising waste management, adopting eco-friendly products and usage, and developing innovative products and services that allow individuals and companies to be greener citizens."

Practical Orange steps since 2009 have included reducing the energy consumption of networks, information systems and buildings; deploying solutions that rely on renewable energy and reducing emissions caused by vehicles and employee business trips.

Reported results from such measures include 225 GWh saved in three years through improved infrastructures; 25 million litres of fuel and 67,000 tons of CO2 emissions saved per year due to setting up more than 2,000 company solar sites and 16 million litres of fuel saved, in 2011 alone, due to the company's renewed vehicle fleet.

'War room' type effort places firefighting assets

(AP) ? From sites on the fringes of wildfires burning around the West, incident commanders spend nearly every waking hour huddled around maps, looking at computer screens or glued to the radio, trying to plot their next move.

Their decisions come after pouring over intelligence that's flooding in from crew leaders, weather forecasters and fuels analysts.

Elsewhere, teams of specialists smooth out the logistics of shuffling firefighters and equipment around the country.

Tom Harbour is the director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service.

He says that the characterization that fire is war is probably a fitting one.

But he expresses cautious confidence that the Forest Service has adequate resources to do the job.

Where are you from? | Chican?sima: Latino politics, news and culture

By Teresa Puente, Wednesday at 4:22 pm

It happens almost every time I get in a cab.??Where are you from??

The Indian cab driver stares at me through the rear view mirror.??You look Indian,? he says.??Yeah, a lot of cabbies tell me that. I?m not from India,?? I say.??You don?t look like an American,? he says.

I let out a deep sigh. I really should ignore this guy. I?m not in the mood to put up with him. But it?s been a long day?I?m tired and irritable.

?Tell me sir. What does an American look like??

He pauses for a moment ?.and then he says it, ?Blonde hair and blue eyes.?

I get mad.

Venezuelan tribe seeks return of sacred stone in Berlin

Thomas Peter/Reuters

German artist Wolfgang von Schwarzenfeld stands in front of a stone from Venezuela that is part of the Global Stone installation in the Tiergarten park in Berlin, Tuesday.

By Reuters

BERLIN -- Wolfgang von Schwarzenfeld's sculptures in a Berlin park were meant to promote world peace, but the 79-year-old German now finds himself at war with a Venezuelan tribe which accuses him of stealing a sacred pink stone known to them as "Grandmother."?

The Venezuelan government is championing the Pemon Indians of the "Gran Sabana" region by demanding the return of the polished stone from Berlin's Tiergarten park -- putting the German government in something of a dilemma.??

With Caracas calling it robbery, and the sculptor arguing that the stone was a legal gift, the monolith is emitting more negative energy than its esoteric fans in Berlin are used to.?

Blissfully unaware of the diplomatic tug-of-war, Robert, a Berlin gardener, got off his bicycle to light joss sticks among the stones from five continents that form the "Global Stone Project", awaiting friends for an afternoon shamanic ritual.?

But newly arrived Venezuelan tourists Grecia Melendez and Juan Carlos Brozoski knew all about the war of the stone and suspected there were political motives behind the protests.?

"(President Hugo) Chavez always wants a conflict with someone," said 32-year-old Melendez, taking photos of the stone, which is engraved with the word "love" in different languages -- and graffiti with couples' names and hearts.?

'A symbol of a united mankind'
Von Schwarzenfeld, a frail figure with whispy white hair and scuffed brown shoes, waved a sheaf of documents authorizing the removal of the stone from the Canaima National Park in 1998.?

As with all the stones arranged in a circle in Berlin, a "sister" stone remained behind. Every summer solstice, their burnished surfaces reflect the sun "as a symbol of a united mankind, hopefully one day in peace", he said.?

The project was inaugurated in 1999 near Berlin's landmark Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburg Gate. As children played among the stones, Von Schwarzenfeld defied Venezuela to take back what he called a "gift to Berlin" from former president Rafael Caldera.?

"Peace for me does not mean the absence of conflict," said the artist, undeterred by threats and what he too suspects are "political motivations" behind the tussle over the stone.?

A video circulated on Youtube has mobilized public opinion in Venezuela, recounting the mythical origins of the Kueka (grandmother in the Pemon language) and its pair, and voicing locals' sense of loss.?

"This man decided to take the Kueka without caring about its cultural value for the Pemon community," Venezuelan activist and ecologist Any Alarcon says in the video.?

Venezuela prosecutors investigating
Culture Minister Pedro Calzadilla told state television the donation was "illegitimate" because the stone was part of "the cultural patrimony of the (Pemon) community". Prosecutors are looking into the stone's removal because "whoever authorized the removal of the Grandmother committed a crime," he said.?

After Pemon tribespeople demonstrated outside Germany's embassy last week with spears, feather headdresses and banners saying "The Pemon People Want Our Wise Grandmother Back," the German envoy promised to relay their feelings to Berlin, while telling them it would be no easy task to return the stone.?

German Foreign ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said Berlin wanted a solution "agreed by all sides -- Venezuela, the indigenous groups, the artist and the city of Berlin".?

Von Schwarzenfeld was not convinced, saying the stone's removal would sacrifice "the 15 years of my life and all the money I spent. If it is taken away, it ruins the whole project."?

Beside him stood German anthropologist Bruno Illius, who has studied the Pemon tribe for two decades. He said there was "no such thing as a 'holy stone' for the Pemones, just small magical stones with practical purposes, like helping you to catch fish."?

Illius rubbished stories about the stone's removal bringing misfortune on the tribe, like drought and the disappearance of the ants they eat in spicy sauce, saying he had eaten plenty of ants on three visits to the region, as recently as last year.?

"This is all a fraud, a deception," the professor said.?

New Egypt president has tight window on economy

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's new president has a window of opportunity to pull the economy from the brink of disaster, but he will have to chart a careful path to convince a host of deeply sceptical players at home and abroad that his is a government they can trust.

After winning the country's first freely contested election for head of state, the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi, 60, brings with him strongly free-market policies that would delight investors were it not for Egypt's daunting economic challenges and fraught politics.

He also brings a detailed economic plan meticulously drawn up over the course of a year, supported by the Brotherhood's well organised political machine.

However, to spur growth and win over investors to trust Egypt for the long term, Mursi will have to restore stability to a country rocked by sometimes violent political turmoil in the 16 months since an uprising forced Hosni Mubarak from power.

To do this, he will have to build up a working relationship with generals who stripped the presidency of many of its powers in the week before the result of the presidential election was announced on Sunday.

He also faces the prospect of a new constitution to replace the current interim constitution which is vague on the full extent of presidential powers.

But analysts say the popular mandate handed to Mursi in the election makes it harder for political opponents to obstruct reforms he initiates.

"There is definitely a window of opportunity. I think there is goodwill out there because of the nature of the result, because it was a clear result," said one Western diplomat.

"If we get a cabinet that is broad based and brings in good economic expertise as well as people who have credibility outside Egypt, then ... it's probably quite good news in the short term," the diplomat said.

ECONOMY ON THE BRINK

Egypt's uprising hammered the economy by chasing away tourists and foreign investors and prompting government employees to strike for higher wages. The economy contracted by 4.3 percent in the first quarter of 2011 and stagnated in the following three quarters.

The Brotherhood's economic plan relies on private Egyptian and foreign investors and the group has pledged to move fast to negotiate a loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) once it forms a government.

"We trust Egypt but, with no security, investors will flee. Change is very hard and bumpy," said Adnan Ahmed Yousef, president of the Union of Arab Banks and chief executive of Bahrain-based Albaraka Banking Group.

An army-backed interim government kept the economy on the rails since Mubarak's overthrow through a series of short-term measures that have brought the country dangerously close to fiscal collapse.

These include financing a burgeoning budget deficit by selling domestic treasury bills and bonds at steadily rising interest rates and shortening maturities.

The pile of local currency debt has built up to well over 600 billion Egyptian pounds from about 500 billion pounds just before the uprising.

The borrowing has stretched the lending ability of local banks, causing the average yield on 1-year T-bills to surge to almost 16 percent, its highest in more than a decade, from 10.4 percent in January 2011.

The interim government borrowed an additional $6 billion in T-bills denominated in U.S. dollars that the new government, strapped for foreign currency, will have to repay or roll over when the first begin maturing in November.

The interim government has also drawn down foreign reserves by more than half, to about $15.5 billion, to support the currency, partly out of fear that an increase in the cost of imported goods would fuel inflation and political discontent.

The dangerously low level of reserves has left the country with less than three months of import coverage.

Brotherhood officials have said that once a new government is in place they plan to pick up from the previous government's stop-start negotiations for a $3.2 billion IMF loan.

An IMF agreement could bring further billions in aid pledged by Arab and international donors - money that Mursi's election could help unlock.

?

HUNDRED DAYS

The IMF has made any loan conditional on a credible programme to get the country's finances under control, that the programme have broad domestic political support and that Egypt line up additional financing from foreign donors.

This could take months to pull together but, with so much short-term debt coming due in the second half of the year, the clock is ticking.

"To a large extent, it depends on who they've got, who they'll bring into the cabinet, who they'll bring in as finance minister. It will take a little bit of time to get clarity," the diplomat said.

"There is still a certain lack of clarity over the distribution of powers, and the risk - you don't have parliament to offer endorsement, you have the military involved in the economy."

Since the uprising, the Brotherhood has been putting together a detailed economic and social programme called al-Nahda (The Renaissance).

The programme aims to shore up the new administration's support among Egyptians though a 100-day campaign in five areas that yield immediate social benefits.

These include rapid measures to get the country's notoriously choked traffic flowing more efficiently, restore security and clean up piles of rubbish that have long blighted Egypt's streets.

Other measures would ensure that bottlenecks disrupting availability of subsidised bread, petrol and butane cooking gas are removed. With energy subsidies eating up as much as a quarter of the state budget, this could prove expensive.

The Brotherhood says it will gradually decrease subsidies on energy products used by industry.

It has said it will target subsidies on products such as gasoline and diesel so that they are directed to the poor.

Fundamentalist Schools Using "Nessie" To Disprove Evolution

The debate between creationists and proponents of evolution isn't ending any time soon, but now some creationists have a secret weapon, "Nessie!"
Certain fundamentalist schools in Louisiana plan to teach children that the Loch Ness monster is real in a bid to disprove Darwin's theory of evolution. From the article: "One ACE textbook ? Biology 1099, Accelerated Christian Education Inc ? reads: 'Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the "Loch Ness Monster" in Scotland? "Nessie" for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur.' Another claim taught is that a Japanese whaling boat once caught a dinosaur. It's unclear if the movie Godzilla was the inspiration for this lesson."

Hooters-style restaurants experiencing a mini-boom - Business ...

NEW YORK -- The waitresses at Twin Peaks wear skimpy plaid tops that accentuate their chests. In case you didn't catch the joke, the chain's logo is an image of two pointy, snow-capped mountains. And the sports bar doesn't stop there: It promises "scenic views."

Twin Peaks owner Randy DeWitt downplays all of that and insists that the appeal of the restaurant goes beyond the obvious. Hearty meals and a focus on making customers feel special, he says, are what really keeps them coming back.

"We believe in feeding the ego before feeding the stomach," he says. Or as the website of the mountain lodge-themed restaurant states, "Twin Peaks is about you, 'cause you're the man!"

Twin Peaks is part of a booming niche in the beleaguered restaurant industry known as "breastaurants," or sports bars that feature scantily clad waitresses. These small chains operate in the tradition of Hooters, which pioneered the concept in the 1980s but has struggled in recent years to stay fresh.

Instead of relying on lust alone, the new crop of restaurants is growing by offering new themes (think: rustic lodges and Celtic pubs) and varied menus (think: pot roast and shepherd's pie instead of just burgers and wings). In other words, they're hoping maybe people really are coming in for the food.

The nation's top three "breastaurant" chains behind Hooters each had sales growth of 30 percent or more last year, according to Technomic, a food industry research firm. They still represent less than 1 percent of the nation's top restaurants, but the upstart chains are benefitting as other mid-priced options like Applebee's and Bennigan's have experienced declines during the economic downturn.

"The younger crowds want to go to a newer place, not where mom and dad took them," says Darren Tristano, an analyst at Technomic.

Tovan Adams says he frequents Tilted Kilt Pub & Eatery in Tempe, Ariz., where waitresses wear matching tartan mini-skirts and bras that fit in with the restaurant's Celtic theme. He even brings his daughters, ages 6 and 9, with him for lunch.

"If you come in the evening, you'll see a lot of kids here," says Adams, an electric engineer who likes the menu's variety. "Everyone's still got their clothes on. If you go to the beach, it's a lot worse than being here."

Lynette Marmolejo, a college admissions worker, dropped in at the Tilted Kilt for the first time recently. She likes that the restaurant is dominated by the "corporate crowd" rather than the "college crowd." And she says the half-dressed waitresses don't bother her.

"Prices and the food - if those are good, I don't care what anybody's wearing," Marmolejo says.

Tilted Kilt, which serves dishes such as shepherd's pie and "Irish nachos" (potato chips instead of corn tortillas), had annual sales of $124 million last year, reflecting growth of 33 percent, according to Technomic. And by the end of this year, the company expects to have 95 locations, up from 57 at the end of last year.

That growth is one reason Tilted Kilt CEO Rod Lynch, bristles at the "breastaurant" moniker. He says the word implies that the company's success is based purely on sex appeal. To the contrary, he says his customers - about three-quarters of whom are men and of the average age of 36 - consistently say the experience is about far more.

Tilted Kilt doesn't go so far to call itself a family restaurant. But Lynch understands the risks of crossing a certain line.

"We want to be very PG-13," he says. Its "class in all things" motto also means servers can't have tattoos, piercings or dyed hair.

Rose Dimov, a 22-year-old waitress at Tilted Kilt, says her job is no different from any other waitressing gig; make guests feel special and ensure they have a good time. As an aspiring ballroom dancer, she also says she's not fazed by the revealing outfit that comes with the job.

"Going to a restaurant should be an experience," Dimov says. "We're entertainers."

Although the name might suggest otherwise, the owner of Mugs N Jugs in Clearwater, Fla., says his place also is like any ordinary restaurant with entertainment. Sam Ahmad says his game room, pool table and karaoke are why 40 percent of his customers are families.

Sales at the restaurant grew to $3 million in 2008, from $700,000 in 1998, Ahmad says, but have since declined because of the recession. After selling a second location to a franchisee last year, Ahmad is looking to find others who want to open franchise locations under the Mugs N Jugs banner.

As for the tank tops and shorts the waitresses wear, Ahmad says they don't reveal too much. And those photos on the Mugs N Jugs website showing waitresses leaning over a pool table? Ahmad explains they are purely for marketing purposes.

"They're at an angle because they're at a pool table," he says. "When you're in the restaurant, you won't see that. She'll be standing."

Taking a cue from its much smaller rivals, Hooters is also making changes.

The company opened its first location in 1983 in Clearwater, Fla., with waitresses sporting the now famous tiny orange shorts and tight white tank tops. The chain grew rapidly at first but has struggled in recent years. Sales have fallen steadily since peaking in 2007 at $960 million, as the menu and decor grew stale.

Last year, a group of private investors bought the chain of 365 restaurants and decided to try to revive the business. In February, Hooters opened a renovated location in Atlanta to showcase its new look with upgraded TVs, an outdoor bar and a covered patio. Remodeling is slated for another six to eight restaurants this year.

In April, Hooters also beefed up its menu with items that include a Baja burger, buffalo chicken sliders and a spinach and shrimp salad. The idea is to offer dishes that draw new customers, says David Henninger, Hooters' chief marketing officer. Currently, more than three quarters of Hooters customers are male, with an average age of 45.

As part of the effort to improve its image, Henninger says Hooters is looking to showcase the life stories of its servers, many of whom are studying to go on to professional careers.

"The public can be misinformed about what we do," says Henninger, who was hired this year. "They jump to their own conclusions."

Without explaining how, he says the "curious" name of the restaurant could easily be misinterpreted. He says that the name is "part of the fun" and is about being "in on the joke."

No matter how hard they try to open their doors to a broader audience, Hooters and its rivals remain the subject of criticism. "If it's an adult entertainment business, that's fine," says Mona Lisa Wallace, president of the San Francisco chapter of the National Organization for Women. "Where they're crossing the line is when they expose young children to the objectification of women."

Not every chain is defensive about the reputation of breastaurants.

At Twin Peaks, based in Addison, Texas, sales last year grew 35 percent to $44 million from the previous year, according to Technomic. Owner DeWitt touts the 22-restaurant chain's amenities but is under no illusions about the main attraction.

Waitresses, for instance, vary their costumes for special occasions. Around the holidays, servers dress up like Santa's little helpers. Around Easter, they dress up like bunnies.

The owner of Tilted Kilt is just as frank. "We hire only spectacular talent," Lynch said. "They have to fit into that costume."

Czech javelin thrower plans to outdo coach at European Championships

By Mike Rowbottom

Vtzslav Vesel_Oslo_June_2012June 23 - V?t?zslav Vesel?, the Czech javelin thrower whose personal best of 88.11 metres at the Samsung Diamond League in Oslo this month heads this year's world listings, is heading towards the London 2012 Games with renewed confidence.

But before that, Vesel? (pictured below) hopes to manage something that proved beyond his illustrious coach Jan ?elezn?, for all his world and Olympic titles.

That is, winning a gold medal at the European Athletics Championships, which take place in Helsinki from next Wednesday (June 27) to July 1.

"Although he won the Olympics and the world championships, Jan never won the Europeans," Vesel??said.

"If I am fit in Helsinki I would love to do it myself."

Vesely's performance in producing a massive personal best in the Bislett Stadium to defeat a field which included all his major rivals for the London 2012 Olympic title has established him as the form thrower of this year so far.

Vtzslav Vesel_June_23
And now he is heading for Helsinki, the place he calls "the sanctuary" of javelin throwing with the ambition of earning his first big international championship medal at the relatively advanced age of 29.

"It's a strange situation to have the Europeans in the same year as the Olympics for the first time, but I think it can be a good preparation for what is to come," he said.

"It is also maybe a little bit risky because the European Championships is a qualifying round and then a final, which is always a bit more demanding.

"But I want to use the opportunity.

"I am expecting there to be a very good atmosphere in Helsinki.

"I think for all javelin throwers this is the best place for a competition. I know what it is like, because I have been there before.

"As I said, it is the sanctuary for the javelin.

"Of course we have a big tradition of the javelin in the Czech Republic because of throwers like ?elezn? (pictured below) and Barbora ?pot?kov?.

"But I think nothing is equal to Finland when it comes to the javelin, because of their tradition.

Jan elezn_June_23
"When Tero Pitk?m?ki?won the world title for Finland in 2007, it was said that there were five million people in Finland, and every one of them was a javelin expert!

"But I think it's very good that such a land exists for the javelin."

Vesel?'s (pictured below) career has been a stop-start affair, although it has had a smoother course since he began training with ?elezn??six years ago.

"Javelin throwing has been very difficult for me for many years," he said.

"I started a bit later than most of the other international throwers, when I was 18, but when I was 20 I gave the sport up.

"Then when I was 23 I started again.

"I was out for that time because I had a big problem with my elbow. I was unable to compete for almost two years.

"When Jan and I first worked together I was still a long way from being able to throw 80 metres.

"The key to my progression is that I have managed to stay healthy.

Vtzslav Vesel_2010_June_22
"I don't think I have a similar technique to Jan. My technique is a lot simpler.

"When I first started working with Jan I tried copying him.

"But in the end I realised it was stupid to do that.

"You must throw the javelin how you feel is natural for you. You cannot just copy."

Having finished ninth at the 2010 Europeans, and fourth in last year's IAAF World Championships, he is edging closer to the podium in a big competition.

"Missing out on a World Championship medal by one place in Daegu last year was more motivation for me," he said.

"It was a little bit frustrating because I knew I was in very good shape.

"But I didn't sell it.

"So definitely this is a big motivation for 2012.

"I hope it Helsinki will be an ideal preparation before the Olympics ? and that there will be nobody missing."

PFT: Ex-Saint calls bounties 'something every team does'

89545031_display_imageGetty Images

A year after nearly making it to the playoffs following a total of six wins in three seasons, the planets aligned for another disastrous season in St. Louis.? And a disaster indeed unfolded, in the form of a 2-14 record.

The finish resulted in owner Stan Kroenke cleaning most of the house, firing G.M. Billy Devaney and coach Steve Spagnuolo.? On Saturday, Devaney joined Doug Farrar and Rob Rang of KJR radio (via NFL.com), and Devaney offered up a wide variety of excuses for the team?s re-collapse in 2011.

The laundry list of lamentations for losing include:? (1) the team went up for sale as soon as Devaney and Spagnuolo were hired; (2) the team had ?an old roster,? a ?really old roster?; (3) there were ?some guaranteed contracts on there that we have to live with?; (4) the lineup was essentially ?Steven Jackson and the Pips,? and Devaney said he ?probably would have been happier with some of the Pips? (oh . . . snap); (5) the team had to make tough and unpopular decisions regarding receiver Torry Holt and Orlando Pace; (6) there wasn?t much money being put into a team that was for sale; (7) after a successful season, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur left to coach the Browns; (8) a ton of injuries in 2011; (9) no offseason in 2011; and (10) a ?ridiculous? schedule in 2011.

?It was just one thing after another,? Devaney said.? ?I could tell in training camp ? I mean early on, I don?t even know if we started playing a preseason game ? things just, especially on offense, things just looked really . . . nobody looked comfortable.?

Then came the regular season, with an opening slate of games against the Eagles, Giants, Ravens, Redskins, Packers, Cowboys, and Saints.? But for a postseason-altering upset win over the Saints (if New Orleans had won, the Saints would have hosted the 49ers in the divisional round), the Rams would have started the year 0-8.

?I mean, we were hoping, and this is ? we?re trying to be optimistic ? we were hoping at the halfway point, we may have had two wins,? Devaney said.? ?We thought if we could scratch out two wins, the back end of the schedule, we could win a couple of more games.? Well, I don?t know if we won any.? We may have won one, but by that time, the roster was decimated.? We were working corners out on Tuesday and they were lining up and starting for us on Sunday. . . .? Five or six of those guys, I couldn?t even tell you who they were.?

The points are all valid, but the lesson for other General Managers and coaches is that, when a team is facing that kind of adversity, it?s important to manage expectations, both inside and outside the building.

It didn?t work internally, or Devaney and Spagnuolo would have gotten another chance to preside over another stunning turnaround.

Bullying of teachers more damaging in online era

MIAMI (AP) ? The bullying that bus monitor Karen Klein endured on a ride home from an upstate New York school was painful and egregious, but also shows how student harassment of teachers and administrators has become more spiteful and damaging in the online era.

Much attention has been paid to students who bully students in class, after school and on the Internet. Less has been given to equally disturbing behavior by students who harass instructors, principals and other adults.

It's something that's long existed; think ganging up on the substitute teacher. But it has become increasingly cruel and even dangerous as students get access to advanced technology at earlier ages.

In Maryland, students posed as their vice principal's twin 9-year-old daughters on pedophile websites, saying they had been having sex with their father and were looking for a new partner. Elsewhere, students have logged on to neo-Nazi and white supremacist sites claiming to be a Jewish or minority teacher and inciting the groups' anger. Others have stolen photographs from teachers' cellphones and posted them online.

"The ways they provoke teachers are limited only by their imaginations," said lawyer Parry Aftab, who described the above cases as just a few of the hundreds she's handled.

Compared with those, what happened to Klein in Greece, N.Y., a suburb of Rochester, was mild, Aftab said.

Students poked the bus monitor with a textbook, called her a barrage of obscenities and threatened to urinate on her front door, among other callous insults. One student taunted: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you."

Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.

Eventually, she appears to break down in tears. A cellphone video of the incident posted on YouTube went viral.

There is no data collected on how often students bully and harass teachers and other school authorities.

The most recent school safety report from the National Center for Education Statistics, the data branch of the U.S. Department of Education, found that 5 percent of public schools reported students verbally abused teachers on a daily or weekly basis. Also, 8 percent of secondary school teachers reported being threatened with injury by a student, as did 7 percent of elementary teachers.

"Is what we saw in this video occurring with many children every day with adults? No," said Ken Trump, president of the National School Safety and Security Services, a Cleveland-based consulting firm. "One incident is one too many, but we certainly have a problem where the authority of educators and school support personnel has been undermined."

Certainly, students harassing teachers isn't new.

John Ristow remembers an incident from his early days as a teacher's assistant in Alpena, Mich. A student in the class was upset that he was singled out by the lead teacher for disrupting other students who were trying to study. When Ristow passed him in the hall later that day, the middle school student lashed out.

"It was very nasty swear words that were extremely demeaning to my character," said Ristow, who now is head of communications for the Broward Teachers Union in Florida.

Ristow held out his hand and said, "Stop."

A security officer came by and asked if Ristow wanted her to take the boy to the principal's office. He said no, deciding to resolve the issue directly with the teacher and student instead. He brought both of them together, they discussed how inappropriate the behavior was and told the student he would face a suspension if it happened again.

"It never happened again," Ristow said.

That was in the late 1980s.

Two decades later, students are equipped with cellphones with video cameras and a plethora of apps that allow them easily to share information among each other and post online.

One of the new ways that students are harassing teachers has become known as "cyberbaiting." Students irritate a teacher to the point that the teacher breaks down; that reaction then is captured in photos or video to post online. A Norton Online Family Report published last year found that 21 percent of teachers had experienced or knew another teacher who had experienced "cyberbaiting."

Then there are cases of students who have created websites and blogs against teachers and administrators.

In South Florida, one student created a Facebook group page called, "Ms. Sarah Phelps is the worst teacher I've ever met!" The student encouraged others to "express your feelings of hatred."

The student, Katherine Evans, took the page down but was suspended for three days and removed from her Advanced Placement classes. She later was represented by the American Civil Liberties Union in a lawsuit against the principal of the Pembroke Pines Charter High School, arguing that her right to freedom of speech had been violated. She settled for $15,000 to cover her legal fees and her suspension was wiped from her record.

Aftab said such an outcome is not uncommon. Unless the incident occurs on school grounds, during school hours, at a school sponsored event or on school equipment, the district generally does not have jurisdiction to expel or suspend a student, although some courts around the country have ruled differently.

Courts "tend to side more with the students unless you can show dramatic problems," Aftab said.

Phelps, in her first public comments since the 2007 incident, said while kids make mistakes, it's the responsibility of adults to turn them into teachable moments.

"We need to redefine and expand our definitions of bullying, particularly techno-spread bullying devoid of personal accountability and disseminated under the guise of free speech," Phelps said in a written statement Friday.

District administrators in New York plan to pursue disciplinary actions against all four students who taunted Klein, though police say she does not want them to face criminal charges, partially because of the onslaught of public criticism and even threats they've endured since the video went online.

A fund started for Klein has raised more than $500,000.

School safety experts and administrators say they hope the incident will encourage parents to sit down and speak with their children about the damaging effects of all bullying, and that school officials will reinforce bullying prevention, not just among students, but also aimed at teachers and adults.

"The schools can have consequences," Trump said, pointing to counseling and disciplinary action. The bigger question, he said, is why a student would treat a bus monitor in a way they would not treat their own grandmother. "And that goes far beyond what a school can deal with."

Does Google CEO Suffer From Mystery Illness?

Google Inc. ?says Chief Executive Larry Page has "lost his voice," but it won't say much more about the matter. Some corporate governance experts think the Internet company should speak up.

The billionaire co-founder missed Google's annual meeting Thursday, and the company said he will miss two other important engagements over the next several weeks.

Google gave no further information about Mr. Page's problems, though it said he continues to lead the company. The lack of details surrounding the matter prompted some speculation on Wall Street about whether he may have a serious medical condition.

In an email to employees on Thursday, however, Mr. Page wrote that "there is nothing seriously wrong with me" and that he would "continue to run the company," according to a person familiar with the matter.

The 39-year-old Mr. Page took over as chief executive last year, his second stint running Google in its 14-year history. He was absent from the shareholder meeting at the company's Mountain View, Calif., headquarters.

At the meeting, Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said Mr. Page had "lost his voice" and "can't do any public speaking engagements for the time being," including the coming week's Google annual conference for software developers and at the second-quarter earnings conference call that is expected in mid-July. He added that "Larry will continue to run the company, he's running all the strategic business decisions and all that."

Mr. Schmidt, who wished Mr. Page a "quick recovery," also joked that co-founder Sergey Brin "has said that this problem will make Larry a better CEO because he's going to have to choose his words very carefully."

Few watchers of the Internet giant seemed in a joking mood, however. That is especially true in Silicon Valley, where the death of Apple Inc. co-founder Steve Jobs is still fresh in people's minds.

Apple's disclosures about the health of Mr. Jobs, who died in October after a battle with pancreatic cancer, were criticized at times for providing few details about his condition.

"We have no specific reason to think there is anything more to Larry's condition, but we find it odd that the company would already rule him out of the 2Q call which is likely still a few weeks away," wrote JP Morgan stock analyst Doug Anmuth in a note to clients.

He added, "We think this could raise some questions among investors."

Mr. Anmuth also noted that Mr. Page, who regularly posts links and comments on his Google+ social network account, hasn't posted anything publicly since May 25.

Inside Google, some executives were told Mr. Page's issue isn't serious and that he's "OK," according to a person familiar with the matter.

Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Herman Leung says he's started to get calls from investors, asking if they should be worried about this. "Yeah, probably a little bit," he said. "Hopefully, Google will give us an update."

Mr. Page's voice generally sounds slightly strained, raspy or hoarse. A recording of a 20-minute speech last month in London showed Mr. Page noticeably pausing several times to swallow before continuing to speak, but it is unclear whether that was a symptom of his current problem.

Some leadership experts contend Google should divulge more about Mr. Page's voice problem. As the CEO of a public company, "he's not entitled to his privacy,'' said Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a senior associate dean at Yale School of Management.

"We need to know if it [his voice] is imperiled," he said.

The Google board should inform shareholders about the cause and likely duration of Mr. Page's condition, according to Mr. Sonnenfeld, author of several leadership books. A degenerative health problem "could have a material adverse impact on the company,'' he added.
